How To Block a Teep Kick (Push Kicks)How To Block a Teep Kick (Push Kicks)

Teep kicks (push kicks) is the trademark of Muay Thai. Unlike many other strikes, a teep kick is a disruption technique by itself. Many people may say it is impossible to counter or disrupt disruptive technique, but believe me, they are wrong. Just like any other technique, it can be countered very efficiently. However, countering this technique has to be performed off distance, which means hands, elbows, and even knees might be the wrong choice.

You don’t have many options left, but you can block push kicks with ease. All seven blocking techniques might be applied successfully.

Blocking requires you to close your guard, lifting the fists to the level of your zygomatic bone. Another option is keeping your right hand on the chin, and putting the left hand in front of the right hand. The glove receives the strike.

To disrupt the attack, there are two options – right diagonal kick to the body or right low kick. If you miss a low kick, at least the opponent will not have open space to attack you.

Anticipation technique is a side kick or push kicks to the opponent’s left leg. I know the technique sounds dirty, but the opponent will not be able to develop technique.

Catching is a bit difficult when the strike goes to the head. If you are super fast, you can lower your shoulders, trapping his left leg on your right shoulder, twisting your left arm around it. Be sure to execute a quick low kick to make the opponent lose his balance.

Countering is not hard. After you successful forced the opponent to miss, there are few options – right push kicks, right diagonal kick, Brazilian kick, or side kick. You can try right spinning back kick or spinning heel kick, but the technique is very risky since the opponent can hit your back.
