#1 – Tissue bruises
Firstly, when we talk about treating bruised knuckles, we must mention the tissue bruises.
Because they happen commonly. Most everyone has suffered a bruise at some point.
Bruised hands may seem worse than bruises on other parts of the body because of the number of nerves in the hands and how frequently we use your hands, but the treatment of tissue bruises is the same regardless of the part of the body bruised.
Some bruised hands
Johns Hopkins explains the discoloration of a bruised area is the result of bleeding into the tissue.
Due to this bleeding, if you take blood-thinning medication, you should contact your doctor about tissue bruises.
WebMD recommends the use of ice to reduce bruising and swelling. Rest and, if possible, elevate the affected area.
Take over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, or Aleve to manage pain and minimize inflammation.
Call a doctor in the case of extreme pain, swelling, or redness.
After a couple of days, apply a heat pack or warm wash cloth several times daily to promote healing.
The pain and tenderness should dissipate within a few days, and the bruise should go away in a couple of weeks.
#2 – Bone Bruises
According to Saint Luke’s Health System a bone bruise happens when some, but not all, of the trabeculae deep inside the bone suffer damage.
If all the trabeculae in an area break, the bone fractures.
The treatment of bone bruises is basically the same as tissue bruises.
Rest the affected bone or joint, reduce swelling with ice or cold packs, elevate if possible, and take medication to reduce pain and inflammation.
A brace to limit movement of the affected bone may also be useful.
Bone bruises last longer than tissue bruises, though.
A bone bruise may cause you problems for weeks and take months or, in some cases, years to heal.
According to Medical News Tod
ay, you should avoid constant or intense pressure on the area, which can slow the healing process or cause more damage.

Natural Treatments for Bone Bruises
Dr. Josh Axe provides some natural treatments for bone bruises. First, avoid the following, which may worsen the bone bruise:
- Alcohol thins the blood and can prevent healing.
- Processed foods contain high amounts of sodium, which may cause you to lose excessive amounts of calcium needed to repair the bone.
- Processed, refined sugar promotes inflammation.
- Smoking constricts blood vessels and increases the risk of clotting. It also reduces the rate of bone healing.
Focus on getting more:
- Leafy greens, fruit, and cultured dairy in your diet. Leafy greens provide vitamin K, which helps regulate healthy blood clotting, reduce infection, and promote bone density.
- Vitamin C, found in many fruits and vegetables, helps collagen form and helps heal damaged bones.
- Cultured dairy, like yogurt, buttermilk, and some cheese provide high quantities of easily-digested calcium to help your bones mend.
Dr. Axe also recommends: lysine, boron, and bromelain supplements.

Treating Bruised Knuckles in Traditional Martial Arts
Chinese martial arts are well known for their ointments and liniments such as Dit Da Jow, sometimes referred to simply as “jow.”
According to Dr. Nick (Nico Mille) at East Meets West International, “Dit Da Jow is for healing bruises, contusions and trauma type injuries (blood stasis, blood stagnation).”
In this video, Dr. Nick discusses jow and how it’s made.
For bone bruises, Dit Da Jow is also a good solution. Besides, you can look for other Iron Palm liniment.
This is specifically designed to help bone healing and promote improved bone density.
In the Indonesian martial art of Cimande Pencak Silat, pronounced “chee-mahn-day pen-chahk see-laht,” they use a liniment called balur.
Like Iron Palm liniment, balur is intended for bone conditioning. Balur is much more difficult to find than jow and Iron Palm liniment, though.
In conclusion, you should apply ice or cold packs to your hands as soon as possible after the injury to reduce swelling and inflammation.
Take medication, like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen to manage pain and inflammation, and give your hands a rest.
Of course, the best option is prevention.
Eat a healthy diet that promotes strong bones and avoid things such as alcohol and cigarettes, which can have an adverse effect on bone health.
